Az-Zalzalah 99:5

بِأَنَّ رَبَّكَ أَوْحَىٰ لَهَا

“Because your Lord has inspired [i.e., commanded] it.”

Saheeh International

Essence

The whole earth has stayed still under our cities only because it was told to, and one quiet word from your Lord will make it speak.

A reflection

Told to be still, and it stayed

At the opening of a sixty-storey tower, the developer cuts a ribbon and gives a speech about vision, ambition and 'what we have achieved'. At the back of the crowd, the geologist who surveyed the site says nothing. She drilled the first boreholes years ago, before any steel arrived. She knows the one thing none of them designed: the bedrock under the foundations, which has simply agreed to stay where it is.

The sources quote an old Arab poet describing the earth: awḥā lahā al-qarāra fa-staqarrat. He inspired it to settle, and it settled, and He fastened it with firm mountains. The phrase uses the same verb as this ayah, with the same unusual little word lahā. The ground has been obeying a command since before the first city was built.

Now the ayah reverses it. On that Day, 'your Lord will have inspired her', and the same earth that stayed still for all of history will quake, give up its load and speak. One word kept it quiet. One word will make it talk.

Sit with the scale of that. Every home, farm, bridge, skyline and human ambition has stood on a surface held steady by an instruction. Our proudest buildings are guests on ground that was told to hold still for them. The ego says 'we built this'. The ayah quietly adds: on what, and by whose leave?

A doubt can arise: a God who keeps reminding us of His power over everything sounds like a proud tyrant. But notice whom the power serves. The Quran says He made the earth submissive for us, 'so walk its paths and eat of His provision' (67:15). Its stillness was a gift, not a display. And He needs nothing from it or from us: He is the Free of need (35:15). Pride in a creature is a lie about its size. His greatness is simply the ground truth, under every other truth.

The geologist at the back of the crowd is not less impressive for knowing this. She is simply more honest. Humility is not thinking little of what we build. It is remembering what it stands on.
