Al-Baqarah · Madani · ayah 112 of 286

Al-Baqarah 2:112

“Yes, [on the contrary], whoever submits his face [i.e., self] in Islām to Allāh while being a doer of good will have his reward with his Lord. And no fear will there be concerning them, nor will they grieve.”

Essence

Not a label but a surrender: whoever gives his whole self to Allah, and does it beautifully, has his reward with his Lord.

A reflection

The face you give away

A sixteen-year-old takes twenty-eight photos of her face before posting one. She tilts her chin, changes the light, tries again. That evening she prays. The same face goes down onto the carpet in prostration, with no retakes and no audience.

The ayah does not say 'whoever submits'. It says 'whoever submits his face to Allah'. The commentators explain why the face. A major early commentator says it is the noblest part of a person, the one most honoured. If the face bows, the rest of the body bows more readily. A classical theologian adds two more reasons. The face is the seat of the senses and of thought, and it can stand for the whole self. And the greatest act of worship, prostration, is made with the face.

Both commentators quote the same lines by a man of Makka who rejected idols before Islam came. He said he had submitted his face to the One to whom the earth submits, carrying heavy rock. He had submitted it to the One to whom the rain clouds submit, carrying sweet water. The whole of creation already bows. The human being is invited to join it.

Allah gains nothing from our bowing. 'Whoever is guided is guided only for his own good' (17:15). The surrender is for us.

Many people today spend enormous energy on the face they show the world: curating it, defending it, worrying how it is received. It is exhausting, because that audience is never satisfied. The ayah offers a different relationship with your own face. Give it to the One who made it, and stop performing.

The photo she posted got forty likes. The prostration was seen by the One who gave her the face, and who is not grading it.
