Al-Baqarah 2:177

“Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allāh, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves; [and who] establishes prayer and gives zakāh; [those who] fulfill their promise when they promise; and [those who] are patient in poverty and hardship and during battle. Those are the ones who have been true, and it is those who are the righteous.”

Essence

Righteousness is not a direction you face but a person you become: believing, giving what you love, keeping your word, holding firm.

A reflection

Righteousness is a person, not a direction

Two men stand in a new prayer hall after Friday prayer, arguing over a compass app. One says the carpet lines are two degrees off the qibla. The other says three. The argument lasts forty minutes. By the door, a man with a sleeping bag waits for someone to notice him. No one does.

This ayah was revealed into an argument very like that one. The qibla had just been turned towards the Kaʿba. The commentators report that the People of the Book argued about it, one community facing west towards Jerusalem and the other east. A classical theologian says the believers too were swept up. Some were so delighted with the new qibla, and others so rigid about the old one, that the direction seemed the greatest thing in religion.

Then the Quran cut across the whole debate. 'Righteousness is not that you turn your faces towards the east or the west.' A linguist among the commentators puts it sharply. This is not the great righteousness that should make you forget every other kind.

Then comes the surprise. The ayah does not say 'righteousness is believing'. It says 'righteousness is the one who believes'. An early commentator explains the idiom. Arabs said 'generosity is Ḥātim' and 'courage is ʿAntara', naming the person in whom the quality lived. Righteousness, here, is not an abstraction. It is a person you could meet.

The qibla still matters. Allah Himself commanded it. But the ayah sets it in its place. The direction you face is the doorway. The person you become is the house.
