Al-Hajj 22:1

“O mankind, fear your Lord. Indeed, the convulsion of the [final] Hour is a terrible thing.”

Saheeh International

Essence

Your Lord raises His voice before the ground moves, and the command comes with its reason: the Hour's quake is vast, so come close.

A reflection

When the Greatest calls something great

We spend the word 'huge' freely. A sale is huge, a goal is huge, a promotion is huge. One manager calls every quarterly update 'historic' in the subject line. By the third email nobody opens them.

This ayah uses its word with care. Of the quake of the Hour it says: shayʾun ʿaẓīm, a tremendous thing. Consider who is speaking. The One who raised the sky and fixed the mountains calls this event great.

A theologian among the commentators puts it in one line. Nothing is greater than what Allah calls great. When we call something huge, we measure it against ourselves. When He calls something tremendous, He measures it against everything He has made.

Notice too the plain word 'thing'. One linguistic commentary says the vagueness is deliberate. Minds fall short of grasping what it really is, and language is too narrow to hold it. So the ayah names it only from the outside: a thing, and a vast one.

This is where the ego shrinks. Our sense of scale is built from our own lives. The deadline, the quarrel and the number in the account feel like the largest things there are. The ayah lays a ruler from outside our world beside them.

The command before it matters too. Not 'fear the Hour', but 'be mindful of your Lord'. The same linguistic commentary notes that the Hour is named as the shaker only as a figure of speech. The true mover is Allah. The quake is His act, so the only shelter from it is with Him.

There is a quiet relief in this. A person who has met nothing greater than himself must carry his own importance everywhere. He inflates his days, because nothing larger is coming. The believer has been told that something larger is coming, and Someone larger still.

So the next time a small thing is called huge, at work or in your own head, remember ʿaẓīm in this ayah. Then let your pride sit down. Keep the word 'tremendous' for what its Owner calls tremendous.
