Ash-Shu'ara 26:141

كَذَّبَتْ ثَمُودُ ٱلْمُرْسَلِينَ

“Thamūd denied the messengers”

Saheeh International

Essence

Thamud turned away one man, Salih, yet the ayah says they denied the messengers: refusing one bearer of the truth refuses every bearer.

A reflection

One man refused, every messenger denied

Thamud had one messenger. His name was Salih, and the next ayah introduces him as their brother. Yet this ayah says they denied the messengers, plural.

The concise commentaries give a plain reason. Every messenger brought one call: worship Allah alone. So whoever rejects that call in one mouth has rejected it in every mouth that ever carried it. Thamud never met Nuh or Hud. They still stood against both.

A boy of eleven takes against his new maths teacher in the first week. She is strict, she says his name wrongly, and she is not the teacher he liked last year. When she crosses out his fifty-four and writes fifty-six beside seven times eight, he insists she is wrong. He thinks he is refusing her. He is refusing arithmetic. Every teacher he will ever have carries the same answer.

That is the quiet trap in rejecting a messenger because of who he is. The objection feels personal: his family, his youth, his poverty, his way of speaking. But the content was never his. Salih received it, as Nuh did before him and as the Prophet would after him.

The mistake can be made from the other side as well. The Quran describes people who accept some messengers and reject others, wanting a way in between (4:150-151). The message is one, so the welcome must be one too.

Ask whose truths you dismiss because of who delivered them. A younger colleague, a relative you find tiresome, a stranger with an accent you do not trust. If what they said was true, it was true before they said it. Your quarrel with the bearer does not touch it. Weigh the words first, and leave your feelings about the speaker for later.
