Fatir 35:3

“O mankind, remember the favor of Allāh upon you. Is there any creator other than Allāh who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no deity except Him, so how are you deluded?”

Saheeh International

Essence

Remember who made you and who keeps feeding you from sky and soil; once that is clear, ask what has turned you to face elsewhere.

A reflection

Two lunches made of the same sky

At one o'clock in a city, two people eat lunch a few streets apart. One is a trader on a high floor, eating a salad that cost what a labourer earns in two hours. The other is that labourer, on an upturned crate beside a building site, eating bread and a boiled egg.

Their lunches look like opposite ends of the economy. Trace them back and they meet. The wheat, the egg, the lettuce and the olive oil all came from soil. The soil grew them because water fell from the sky. Neither man made a single grain of it. Neither could make one drop of rain to save his life.

This ayah asks the question that collapses the distance between them. Is there any creator other than Allah who provides for you from the sky and the earth? The commentators gloss it plainly: from the sky, the rain; from the earth, what grows.

Notice who is addressed. Not 'O believers', not 'O people of Makkah', but yā ayyuhā al-nāsu, O people. Everyone eats from these two sources. The trader's portfolio and the labourer's wage are only routes the food took to reach them.

This is where the ego shrinks. We speak of earning our living, and in a narrow sense we do. But the living itself is not ours to make. A billionaire cannot negotiate with a drought. A nation cannot vote in a harvest.

That is majesty spoken as a question. Allah could simply have declared it. Instead He asks, and lets every listener check the answer against his own plate. Then come the only words that can follow honestly: lā ilāha illā huwa. There is no god but Him.
