Essence
Allah swears by His own Book, and the word He chooses for it first pictured a bridle-strap: wisdom that holds you back before you bolt.
A reflection
Sworn by the book on top of the wardrobe
In many homes the mushaf lives on top of the wardrobe, wrapped in a cloth. It comes down for a death in the family, for Ramadan, for a child's first lesson. It is handled with great care. It is not often opened.
Now read the second ayah of Ya-Sin with that wardrobe in mind. Wal-Qurʾān al-ḥakīm: by the wise Quran. Allah swears, and what He swears by is the very book in that cloth.
Most of us hear this line as a preamble, a stately phrase the reciter passes through on the way into the surah. It is not a preamble. The wa is the particle of an oath, and an oath is the heaviest kind of speech there is. It is always sworn by something held great, because the oath borrows its weight. One classical reader put it simply: ponder the worth of what is sworn by, and of what it is sworn upon.
Think about who is speaking. When people swear, they reach up for something larger than themselves, because their own word does not feel like enough. Allah has nothing above Him to reach for. Everything He swears by is already His. Here He swears by His own speech.
That turns the wardrobe scene inside out. The Book is not raised by being in your house. You are raised by being near it. Pride assumes it already knows what the book says, because it has heard the sounds since childhood. The oath does not flatter that pride. It quietly places the book above the one holding it.
Someone will ask why God would swear at all. Does He need to be believed? He gains nothing if you believe and loses nothing if you refuse. The oath is for the hearer. The people who first heard it had told the Prophet ﷺ, 'You are not sent' (13:43). Allah met them in the form of speech they took most seriously. That is not vanity. It is the strongest assurance there is, given to people who had not earned one.
