Sad 38:12

كَذَّبَتْ قَبْلَهُمْ قَوْمُ نُوحٍ وَعَادٌ وَفِرْعَوْنُ ذُو ٱلْأَوْتَادِ

“The people of Noah denied before them, and [the tribe of] ʿAad and Pharaoh, the owner of stakes,[1322]”

Saheeh International

Essence

Before Makkah, a people with centuries, a people with strength and a king with a firmly pegged state all stopped short of the truth.

A reflection

A charge that pulls up short

A woman fills an online basket for a winter charity appeal. Coats for two children, a blanket, a small heater. She types her card number, looks at the total, and closes the tab. Nobody saw. Nothing was said. But something set off and did not arrive.

That is close to the oldest picture of the word kadhdhabat. The lexicons say the root means falling short of the truth, not reaching the end of what should be. Its first images are physical. A warrior who charged at his opponent and then pulled up was said to have lied: his charge kadhaba. A she-camel's milk 'lied' when it was expected to last and dried up. A cloth painted to look embroidered lied by its appearance.

So takdhīb, the form used here, is more than saying 'you are lying'. It is calling the truthful a liar and the true false, and insisting on it. And it often begins as a charge that stops. The Quran puts Nūḥ's stay among his people at nine hundred and fifty years (29:14). That is not a people who never came near the truth. That is a people who came close again and again, and pulled up.

Someone may ask whether this is fair. Surely honest disagreement is not a crime? But takdhīb is not a quiet private doubt. It is a verdict passed on a truthful man, repeated over years, while the evidence stood in front of them. The root names the moment the rider saw where the charge would take him, and reined in.

This removes a comfortable excuse. We imagine deniers as people who simply never understood. The root suggests something more familiar. A person sets out towards a truth, sees what it will cost, and pulls on the reins.

The question for us is not whether we have ever called a prophet a liar. It is quieter. Where did I set out towards something I knew was right, and stop at the total? A prayer begun and abandoned for the phone. A promise to visit an old neighbour. A charity basket closed. Each is a small charge that pulled up. The cure each time is the same: finish the charge.
