Sad 38:40

وَإِنَّ لَهُۥ عِندَنَا لَزُلْفَىٰ وَحُسْنَ مَـَٔابٍ

“And indeed, for him is nearness to Us and a good place of return.”

Saheeh International

Essence

After the wind, the jinn and the uncounted gift, Allah names what mattered most: with Us he has nearness, and a beautiful place to return.

A reflection

With Us: the only ledger that keeps moving

Wa inna lahu ʿindanā la-zulfā: and he has, with Us, nearness. Three ayat have described a kingdom no one after him would have. Then the last word goes to something no kingdom can buy: ʿindanā, with Us.

One classical suggestion links ʿind, 'with', to a picture from the desert. A camel that turned aside from the herd to graze alone was ʿanūd. To be 'with' someone, on this view, is to have turned from everyone else until you stand beside him. It is one view, not settled. But it fits this ayah, where a man of crowds and courts is described by whom he stood beside.

One commentary reads the order carefully. Nearness and honour with Allah, alongside the great kingdom, show that the kingdom did not harm him or take from his rank. Then the same commentator steps back from Sulayman's whole life. He traces the reported journeys, cities and lands. And he ends with a sentence that rolls the map away. Then the carpet was folded up, and his tent was pitched among the armies of the dead. So glory be to the King who endures, whose kingdom does not pass.

That is the majesty in this ayah. Every human kingdom ends in a tent among the dead. Only one kingdom does not end.

The ego builds its own ledgers. Followers, job titles, the house, the school the children got into. A man spends twenty years building a following online; more than a million people know his face. When he dies, his profile stays up, frozen. For a year strangers leave hearts under his last post. Then the hearts stop, and the number never changes again.

Only one ledger keeps moving after death: what you are ʿinda Allah. Does He declare this to be admired? He needs nothing from us. He says it so that we stop investing everything in ledgers that freeze. Pride grows on numbers that end.

So ask of every effort this week: does it count ʿindanā?
