An-Nisa 4:15

“Those who commit immorality [i.e., unlawful sexual intercourse] of your women - bring against them four [witnesses] from among you. And if they testify,[169] confine them [i.e., the guilty women] to houses until death takes them or Allāh ordains for them [another] way.[170]”

Essence

The earliest law here guarded reputations behind four witnesses, set a temporary measure, and promised in the same breath that Allah would open a way.

A reflection

Four witnesses: a wall built around a name

After an office party, someone says she saw two colleagues leave in the same taxi. By Monday the story has a hotel in it. By Wednesday a young woman notices that conversations stop when she walks into the kitchen.

Set that week beside this ayah. Before anything at all may happen, it asks for four witnesses. Not one person's impression. Not a rumour that has passed through four mouths. Four people of the community, each one present.

The word for witnessing carries that demand in its root. Shahāda joins being present, knowing and declaring. The tongue was once called al-shāhid, the one that tells what the eye saw. Testimony, in this language, is never hearsay. It is what you say because you were there.

The commentaries name the purpose plainly. Allah set four for this charge alone, they say, as a stringency on the accuser and a covering for His servants. Elsewhere the Quran turns the weight right around. Those who accuse chaste women and cannot bring four witnesses are themselves punished, and their testimony is never accepted again (24:4).

So the strictest standard of proof in the law surrounds a person's honour. The burden falls on the one who speaks, not the one spoken about.

Most of us will never sit in a court. But we sit in group chats, staff kitchens and family gatherings, and the ayah's standard reaches there too. If you were not present, you do not know. If you do not know, you say nothing.

What story about someone else are you carrying this week that would not survive four witnesses?
