Ghafir 40:72

فِى ٱلْحَمِيمِ ثُمَّ فِى ٱلنَّارِ يُسْجَرُونَ

“In boiling water; then in the Fire they will be filled [with flame].”

Saheeh International

Essence

Dragged through scalding water and then into the Fire, the deniers become the very fuel that keeps it burning.

A reflection

The same word for a friend

Fī al-ḥamīm. Into the scalding water.

The word ḥamīm has a startling double life. The lexicons give it two senses. Water heated to its limit. And the close friend, the near relative whose concerns are your own: the one who burns with what burns you. Both are established.

This surah has already used the word once, in its other sense. On the Day that draws near, it said, the wrongdoers will have no ḥamīm, no devoted friend, and no intercessor to be obeyed (40:18).

Read the two together and the picture is haunting. In the world, they had ḥamīm: close companions, loyal allies, people who shared their causes and their contempt for the messenger. On the Day, those friends are gone. What remains for them is another ḥamīm: the scalding water.

The Quran returns to this elsewhere. No close friend will ask after a close friend (70:10). The intimacy that bound people together in falsehood does not survive the Day.

A man spends his twenties at the centre of a lively group of friends. They laugh through every reckless night together. They cover for each other, egg each other on. At forty, he is seriously ill for a year. Hardly any of them visit. A quiet colleague he barely noticed in those years brings him soup every week.

That is a small picture of what the ayah suggests. The friends who shared our worst habits are rarely the ones who carry us when it matters.

The word is a quiet question to every reader. Who are your ḥamīm, the people whose concerns are your own? Will they still be beside you when everything else is stripped away? Or are they the kind of closeness that turns, in the end, into something that burns?
