Qaf 50:24

أَلْقِيَا فِى جَهَنَّمَ كُلَّ كَفَّارٍ عَنِيدٍ

“[Allāh will say], "Throw into Hell every obstinate disbeliever,”

Saheeh International

Essence

Spoken over the head of a lifelong arguer, the verdict falls on every persistent coverer of the truth and every knowing refuser.

A reflection

Spoken about, never spoken to

A passenger argues with the cabin crew for an entire flight. He corrects their safety briefing, heckles the announcements and lectures the woman beside him. On landing, the captain does not come back to speak to him. She radios the ground: two officers to the aircraft, please.

That is the shape of this ayah. Look at who is addressed. It is not the man. The command alqiyā, 'throw, you two', is spoken to a pair. Many commentaries name them as the driver and the witness who brought each soul forward three ayat earlier. Some read it as one angel addressed in the dual. On either reading, the person himself is not given a sentence of his own.

He spent a lifetime having his say. He met every warning with a reply and every sign with a counter-argument. Now the most powerful speech in existence passes over his head.

The ego's deepest wish is to be addressed, answered and taken seriously. Here it is not even spoken to. That is majesty, and it shrinks pride at the root. In this world, eloquence can delay, confuse and charm. A good talker often wins a second hearing. Before Allah, eloquence has nothing left to work on. The record has been laid out by the one who kept it (50:23). The verdict needs no debate.

A sceptic may ask whether this is the language of an offended ruler. Does a perfect Lord need to crush those who would not praise Him? The Quran answers in its own words: 'What would Allah do with your punishment, if you are grateful and believe?' (4:147). His kingdom gains nothing from a single soul in the Fire. It loses nothing from a single soul in the Garden.

The verdict is not wounded vanity settling a score. It is the end of a road the man chose step by step, under warnings he admitted hearing.

So there is mercy folded inside this threat. Today you are still being spoken to. Every ayah you read is Allah addressing you directly, by name, while the conversation is open. The humble person answers now, and never meets that silence.
