Al-Jumu'ah · Madani · ayah 6 of 11

Al-Jumu'ah 62:6

“Say, "O you who are Jews, if you claim that you are allies of Allāh, excluding the [other] people, then wish for death, if you should be truthful."”

Essence

Anyone who claims to be Allah's chosen friend can be tested with one question: are you glad to meet Him?

A reflection

Not a death wish

A young man, in a dark week, posts online that he wishes he could just die and be with Allah. Some friends reply with hearts. His older cousin phones him that night instead.

This ayah can be misheard in two opposite ways. Some hear a taunt aimed at a Madinan community long gone, nothing to do with them. Others hear something more dangerous: that real faith shows itself in wanting to die. Neither reading survives a closer look.

The Prophet ﷺ was explicit. None of you should wish for death because of a harm that has struck him (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). If someone must say something, he taught, let him say this. 'O Allah, keep me alive as long as life is better for me, and take me when death is better for me'. That is the cousin's answer. It does not deny the pain. It hands the timing back to Allah, and asks Him for good either way.

So what is the ayah asking for? Another hadith shows the difference. Whoever loves to meet Allah, Allah loves to meet him (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim). A wife of the Prophet ﷺ objected at once that all of us dislike death. That is not it, he replied. When death comes to a believer, he is given good news of Allah's pleasure, and nothing is dearer to him than what lies ahead.

Loving the meeting is not hating life. It is the settled confidence that the One you are going to is the One you have been living for. That confidence is exactly what the ayah's challenge tests. It does not ask anyone to want to die. It asks whether a claim of special closeness has the eagerness to match.

The cousin's call ends with both of them saying the du'a together. The young man is still in pain. But he is no longer reaching for death. He is reaching for the One who decides it.
