Al-Isra · Makki · ayah 76 of 111
Al-Isra 17:76
“And indeed, they were about to provoke [i.e., drive] you from the land [i.e., Makkah] to evict you therefrom. And then [when they do], they will not remain [there] after you, except for a little.[766]”

Essence
They almost unsettled him out of his land, yet had they driven him out, they would have stayed on only a little after him.
A reflection
Pushed to leave on your own feet
An allotment holder of thirty years learns that the new committee wants his plot for a friend. Nobody asks him to leave. Instead the letters begin. A weed at the fence line. A shed four inches too tall. A water butt in the wrong corner. By spring he is tired enough to hand back his key, and everyone can say he chose to go.
The verb in this ayah names that tactic exactly. Istafazza comes from a root of lightness. The lexicons say it means to unsettle someone out of their composure. One records that istafazza min can mean to unsettle a person until he leaves a place altogether. A commentator glosses it simply: to make you light, so that you are lifted off the land you stand on. Another calls it disturbing someone in haste.
So the aim was not to throw him out by force. It was to make staying unbearable. One commentator connects this pressure to the time the clans hemmed the Prophet ﷺ into a valley and pressed in on him. Pressure like that is designed so that the target removes himself.
Now notice what the tactic depends on. It only works on someone who can be made light. The answer, then, is weight. Look at what the surah places on either side of this ayah. Just before it: 'had We not made you firm' (17:74). Just after it: establish the prayer, from the sun's leaning into the night, and at dawn (17:78). Firmness from Allah, and fixed anchors through the day.
Good strategy begins by reading the other side's plan. If the plan is to unsettle you, refuse to be unsettled. Keep your routines, your prayers and your temper exactly where they were. The allotment letters lose their power the day the man stops reading them as verdicts on his worth, and starts reading them as tactics.
That is the lesson for anyone being worn down at work, in a family or in a community. Name the tactic. Then add weight rather than speed: patience, prayer, the company of steady people.
Pressure designed to make you light cannot easily move someone made heavy with the remembrance of Allah.
