Fatir 35:26

ثُمَّ أَخَذْتُ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوا۟ ۖ فَكَيْفَ كَانَ نَكِيرِ

“Then I seized the ones who disbelieved, and how [terrible] was My reproach.”

Essence

When the messengers have said all they were sent to say, the outcome passes to Allah alone, and He takes hold only after long patience.

A reflection

Where the warner's work ends, His begins

Read the four ayat before this one as a single conversation with the Prophet ﷺ. You cannot make the dead hear (35:22). You are only a warner (35:23). We sent you, as We sent others (35:24). If they deny you, others were denied (35:25). Every line marks a limit on what the messenger can do.

Then the voice changes. Thumma akhadhtu: then I seized. No messenger is in this sentence. The warning was theirs. The taking hold is His alone.

That is a humbling line for anyone who has been wronged and wants to settle the score personally. Picture a retired man who was cheated out of his savings by a property developer. He keeps a box file on him: letters, cuttings, photographs of the man's new house. Every Sunday evening he takes it down and reads it again. He drafts complaints he never sends. He is seventy-three, and the file has become the centre of his week.

This ayah gently takes the file out of his hands. Not because the wrong did not matter. Because the seizing was never his to do. His part was to speak the truth, perhaps to seek what justice is open to him, and then to stop carrying it. The ego quietly assumes that if I do not make it right, nobody will. The ayah answers: I seized them. Not you.

It also humbles the proud on the other side. Every people in the line of 35:25 thought itself secure. They were seized by One they never troubled to fear.

Does Allah need us to admire His power when He says this? No. Nothing is added to Him by our watching. The line is spoken for the wronged, to let them put the file down.
