So it will be: Allah pairs the mindful with companions of radiant beauty and wide, lovely eyes, ending every loneliness.
A reflection
Like that, and more
Kadhālika wa-zawwajnāhum bi-ḥūrin ʿīn: so it will be, and We will pair them with companions with wide, lovely eyes.
The ayah opens with a small word that is easy to skip. Kadhālika: like that, thus.
The commentaries pause on it. Several read it as: the matter is as We have described. One linguistic commentary records a deeper reading from an earlier scholar. The point, it says, is that the description has not been exhausted. The Garden is the kind of thing description cannot fully reach. So it is as if Allah says: the matter is like that, and like what resembles it.
A grandmother tries to tell her grandchildren about the bread her own mother baked in a village oven. She describes the crust, the smell, the steam when it was torn open. The children listen, but she can see they are imagining supermarket loaves. At last she laughs and gives up. It was like that, she says. But more.
That is what kadhālika does in this passage. It pauses the list of gifts and admits, gently, that the list is not the thing. Silk, gardens, springs, companions. All true, and all pointing beyond themselves.
This matters for how we read every description of the Garden. The words are real, and they are also a floor, not a ceiling. Whatever we imagine, the reality is more.
It also matters for how we hope. Our hopes are shaped by what we know. The Garden is described in the shapes we know so that we can begin to long for it. Then kadhālika opens the door a little wider: like that, and more than you can picture.
