Essence
After telling His Prophet whom to fear and what to follow, Allah gives the last instruction: hand the outcome to Him, for He is enough.
A reflection
The firm that carried on without him
A man has not taken a full week off in six years. The firm, he says, would fall apart without him. He keeps the client list in his head and the passwords in his phone. Then a burst appendix puts him in hospital for nine days. When he returns, the firm has carried on. A colleague has even fixed the invoicing he kept meaning to fix.
His relief is mixed with something less comfortable. He had been needed, and being needed had become who he was.
This ayah takes that kind of ego gently apart. Wa kafā bi-llāhi wakīlā: Allah is sufficient as the One in charge. One lexicon defines the root of kafā as the measure that needs nothing added. A kufya was a ration of food that was enough to live on. Servants who saw to a household's work were kufāt. To suffice a man his burden was to take it off him.
Wakīl, said of Allah, is the One who has taken charge of all He created. Nothing reaches Him by anyone's appointment. He was not hired, and He has always held the whole affair. The man in hospital held a firm together for six years and found it held without him. Creation has been held from the start by One whom neither drowsiness nor sleep overtakes (2:255).
That should shrink the pride that believes everything rests on us. It is not a humiliation. It is a release. You were never the wakīl of the world. You were a servant given a task inside it.
Someone may ask why Allah tells us that He suffices. Does He want to be leaned on, the way a proud man enjoys being needed? The reverse is true. He needs nothing from our trust. Our leaning adds nothing to Him, and our self-reliance takes nothing away. He tells us He is enough because we exhaust ourselves pretending otherwise. The sentence is for our rest, not His standing.
